Hertford

A civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county, Hertford (/ˈhɑːrtfərd/ HART-fərd, locally /ˈhɑːrfərd/ HAR-fərd) is the town of Hertfordshire, England. When it was governed by the king's reeves, Hertford has been Hertfordshire since Saxon times. At County Hall in Hertford is the Hertfordshire County Council. Playing at Hertingfordbury Park is Hertford Town F.C., a Non-League football club.

Next to the headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council at County Hall in Hertford, Hertford Town Youth FC, a FA Charter Standard Award|FA Charter Standard Football Club, play at County Hall Playing Fields. At Balls park, Hertford, the club plays matches. Linking it south to London and the M25 and north to Royston and Cambridge, Hertford lies west of the A10 and the Kingsmead Viaduct. A Waterbus that is scheduled operates between the priory of Hertford and Ware, and the Shopping centre of Bircheley Green during April to September.

A building, where entertainment such as comedy and art exhibitions take place, is Hertford Corn Exchange. In St Andrew's Church, a stained-glass window is a fringe theory part that links Hertford to the Holy Grail and Knights Templar. From Motte and Bailey castle in Hertford, the Motte can be found just behind Castle Hall, a short distance from the modern castle. Communication was improved by the construction of the Lea Navigation Canal and the arrival of the railway, Hertford grew and prospered as a market and county town.

In England, the first synod of bishops was held either at Cambridgeshire's Hartford, or in Hertford possibly the first mention of the town was in 673 A.D. Between the five and thirteen ages and attended Hertford Grammar School, Alfred Russel Wallace who proposed a theory of natural selection as Charles Darwin lived in Hertford.
